Complement

The elements not in A, relative to a fixed universe U
Complement

Fix a UU (the “universe”). For AUA \subseteq U (see ), the complement of AA in UU is

Ac=UA, A^{c} = U \setminus A,

where \setminus is .

Complements exchange and via De Morgan’s laws (relative to UU).

Examples:

  • If U={1,2,3,4,5}U=\{1,2,3,4,5\} and A={2,5}A=\{2,5\}, then Ac={1,3,4}A^c=\{1,3,4\}.
  • In U=RU=\mathbb{R}, the complement of (0,1)(0,1) is (,0][1,)(-\infty,0]\cup[1,\infty).
